MYS, MONTSERRADO TOWNSHIP COMMISSIONERS DISCUSS STRONGER COLLABORATION ON YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

MONROVIA, LIBERIA, October 29, 2026:

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Atty. Cornelia Wonkerleh Kruah, has reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with township authorities in Montserrado County as part of efforts to advance decentralization and improve the delivery of youth development programs.
Minister Kruah made the statement during a meeting with township commissioners of Montserrado County on Wednesday, October 28, at the Ministry’s conference room in Monrovia.
The meeting provided an opportunity for the commissioners to discuss the need for stronger coordination between the Ministry and local authorities, particularly in ensuring that government programs and opportunities reach communities effectively.

Speaking on behalf of the commissioners, Congo Town Commissioner Edwin Horton Lahai said the engagement was part of a broader effort to build stronger working relationships with government institutions. Commissioner Lahai emphasized that decentralization must be accompanied by meaningful engagement with local authorities, noting that township commissioners are strategically positioned to connect government programs with the communities they serve.

He called on ministries, agencies, and commissions to involve township authorities not only when projects are being initiated but also during implementation. He further stressed the importance of collaboration among townships and the borough in Montserrado County, adding that commissioners want to play a more active role in ensuring that government programs respond to community needs.
Responding to the concerns, Minister Kruah thanked the commissioners for initiating the engagement and said decentralization remains on the Ministry’s agenda.

The Minister acknowledged the importance of stronger coordination with township authorities and assured the commissioners that the Ministry would work to improve its engagement with local government structures.
As part of the proposed follow-up, Minister Kruah announced plans to arrange a coordination meeting involving the Ministry’s deputy and assistant ministers, particularly the team responsible for Montserrado County, to strengthen communication between the Ministry and the commissioners before the end of December 2026.

She also disclosed plans to establish a WhatsApp communication platform through which the commissioners can receive information about opportunities, programs, and other relevant activities of the Ministry. Additionally, the Minister announced that she expects to begin a tour of Montserrado County in approximately two weeks and proposed exploring visits to townships as part of the exercise. Minister Kruah also highlighted the Ministry’s plans to establish a Youth Advisory Council as part of efforts to strengthen engagement on youth-related issues.

The engagement forms part of ongoing efforts to improve coordination between the Ministry of Youth and Sports and local authorities, with the aim of strengthening community participation and ensuring that youth development initiatives reach intended beneficiaries.
The Ministry remains committed to exploring practical approaches to collaboration that support the effective implementation of its programs across Montserrado County.
